Sell or donate: set aside furniture and household goods that still have life in them.
Set aside hazards: old paint, pool and lawn chemicals, batteries, tires, and electronics need separate drop-off.
Fill the dumpster: large items go in first, smaller things fill the gaps.

Which dumpster size works for a full house?

Most full houses take a 30-yard, which holds about 12 pickup truck loads. A smaller home, or one where the family has already taken a lot, may only need a 20-yard.

How many days will an estate cleanout take?

Longer than you think. Sorting is slow, and it's emotional. Book the 7 day rental, which is $550 for a 30-yard. If you need more time, it's $25 a day after that.

What should we do before the dumpster comes?

Go room by room and pull out papers, photos, jewelry, and anything family members want. Set aside what you'll sell or donate. Then the dumpster is only for what's truly left.

What can't go in?

Garages and sheds hide most of the problem items: old paint, pool chemicals, car batteries, and tires. Those have to be dropped off separately. TVs and computers stay out too, and so does any fridge or AC unit that still has refrigerant in it.
