About Auburndale
Auburndale is a Polk County city of 15,616 people, as of the 2020 census. It sits along US-92 between Lakeland and Winter Haven, about 40 miles northeast of Tampa.
Frank Fuller founded the town in 1880 while escaping cold Northeast winters. It was first called Sanatoria, after a hotel there. When the railroad arrived, settlers from Auburndale, Massachusetts suggested the name it carries today. The city incorporated in 1911 and grew as a citrus and shipping center.
Today Auburndale is known for City Park downtown, Lake Myrtle Sports Park, International Market World, and lakes like Lake Ariana. The population grew about 42 percent from 2000 to 2020, and that growth keeps construction and renovation work busy across the city.
