About Mulberry

Mulberry is a Polk County city of 3,952 people, as of the 2020 census. Its official motto is "Official Phosphate Capital of the World," and it is also called the Crossroads of Florida, where SR-37 and SR-60 meet.

The town takes its name from a mulberry tree where the railroad stopped to let off passengers and drop the mail. In 1886, phosphate rock was discovered in the Peace River, and mining replaced logging as the main industry. That stability led Mulberry to incorporate in 1901. Two railroads once served the town, one running east and west and one running north and south.

Phosphate companies like Mosaic and CF Industries still operate in the area, and the 334-acre Alafia River Reserve is part of the city.
