About Nichols
Nichols is an unincorporated community in Polk County, about 11.4 miles south-southwest of Lakeland and about 2 miles west of Mulberry. It has its own post office with ZIP code 33863, and it sits on the CSX Valrico Subdivision rail line along Polk County Road 676.
Nichols was built in 1905 as a company town during the phosphate mining boom in the Bone Valley region. At its peak it had about 120 houses and roughly 400 people, which made it the third largest of the Bone Valley phosphate towns. It was unusual for its time, with company housing inside the mine site and private homes outside the gate. The town had its own general store, hospital, and school.
In 1960 the remaining company homes were sold to employees, and Nichols became the small unincorporated community it is today. Its post office and church are still open.
