About Haines City
Haines City is the third largest city in Polk County, with 26,669 people at the 2020 census. Its nickname is the Heart of Florida.
The town was platted in 1885 as Clay Cut, soon after the South Florida Railroad reached the area. There was no station yet. Local history says settlers got one by agreeing to rename the town for Colonel Henry Haines, a senior railroad official. The town incorporated in 1914.
Citrus built Haines City, and today steady growth keeps construction and remodeling busy across the city. Lake Eva Park is a local landmark near downtown.
