About Polk City

Polk City is a city of about 2,700 people in north-central Polk County, incorporated in 1925 and named after the county, which itself was named for James Knox Polk, the 11th President of the United States. The city sits just north of I-4 between Lakeland and Orlando, with SR-33 (Commonwealth Avenue) running north-south through the center of downtown. The 33868 zip code covers both the city and a much larger area of surrounding unincorporated county, with a combined population of nearly 11,000.

Polk City holds a genuinely unusual distinction: it is the only community in Florida completely contained within the Green Swamp, the largest remaining natural area in Central Florida. The Green Swamp covers about 870 square miles and supports nearly 40 percent of Florida's native vertebrate wildlife. It is also the headwaters for four major rivers and one of the most important freshwater recharge areas in the state. Colt Creek State Park sits within the Green Swamp and offers hiking, fishing, and camping just outside the city.

The city was founded in 1922 by Isaac Van Horn, a Boston developer who stopped to rest by what is now Lake Agnes and decided on the spot to build a town. By 1925 Polk City was incorporated and the Van Horn Building on Commonwealth Avenue served as offices, a chamber of commerce, a newspaper, and city hall all in one. The Great Depression hit the city hard — the population fell from 600 in 1930 to 203 by 1960. The city slowly recovered and was officially reclassified from a town to a city in 2005.

Fantasy of Flight, one of Florida's most distinctive aviation museums and attractions, operated near Polk City for years before closing. The Van Fleet Trail, a 29-mile paved multi-use trail, runs through the area connecting Mabel to Polk City along a former railroad corridor. Ski Fluid offers water ski jumping lessons on Lake Grew. LeLynn RV Resort sits on one of the area's many lakes. Lake Agnes and Lake Mattie are the two primary lakes within or adjacent to the city.
