About Polk City
Polk City had 2,713 people at the 2020 census, up from 1,562 in 2010. It sits on the north shore of Lake Agnes at SR-33 and SR-559, just north of I-4. The city calls itself the Gateway to the Green Swamp, and SR-33 runs north from town across the swamp.
Developer Isaac Van Horn passed through in the summer of 1922 and stopped to cool off by what is now Lake Agnes. He liked the area enough to buy land and build a town, which he named for Polk County, itself named for President James K. Polk. The town incorporated on April 3, 1925. That same year the Van Horn Building opened, housing the town hall, the chamber of commerce, and the local newspaper.
The Depression hit hard. The population fell from 600 to 203 between 1930 and 1960, then slowly recovered. Polk City changed from a town to a city in 2005. The Van Fleet State Trail runs nearby.
