A Recent Concrete Demo in Lakeland

A homeowner in South Lakeland called us last summer about their driveway. It was a mess — cracked, settled, chunks missing. Water pooled in the low spots every time it rained. They wanted it gone so they could pour a new one.

We showed up with a Bobcat and hydraulic breaker. Broke up the entire driveway in about four hours. Loaded all the concrete chunks into our 30-yard dumpster and hauled it to the recycling facility. By 2 PM, their driveway was completely cleared down to dirt and ready for the new concrete crew.

Why Concrete Demo Needs the Right Equipment

Concrete is heavy, thick, and reinforced with rebar. Breaking it up requires serious equipment. A hydraulic breaker on a Bobcat can break up a standard two-car driveway in a few hours. The same job with hand tools would take days. We also wet down the concrete constantly while working — breaking concrete creates clouds of fine silica dust that gets everywhere if you let it.

Hydraulic Breaker on Bobcat
Large driveways, slabs, and open areas. Fastest method for most jobs.
Concrete Saw
Controlled cuts, rebar cutting, working near structures or landscaping.
Jackhammer
Smaller jobs, tight spaces, and detail work where equipment cannot reach.
Excavator with Hydraulic Thumb
Foundation removal and deep slab work requiring heavy lifting.

What We Remove

Driveways

Our most common concrete job. Lakeland's older neighborhoods — Lake Hollingsworth, Dixieland, South Lake Morton — have driveways from the 1960s and 70s that are cracked, settled, or layered. We removed a driveway in Lake Hollingsworth last year the homeowner thought was a standard 4-inch pour. It turned out to be 8 inches thick with heavy rebar throughout. Took twice as long as estimated but we got it done. A standard two-car driveway at 4 inches thick weighs about 5 tons — you need proper equipment to move that kind of weight.

Patios and Pool Decks

Florida heat makes concrete expand and contract daily. Water seeps underneath and washes away the base. Tree roots push from below. Most patios are 4 inches thick. Pool decks require extra care — we section off the area and work methodically to protect the pool coping and tile. Last spring we removed a cracked patio in Dixieland for a homeowner switching to pavers. The paver installer said it was the cleanest, most level site he had worked on all year.

Sidewalks

Usually 4 inches thick, poured in 4 to 5 foot sections. We break along the control joints and pop out each section. City sidewalks in Lakeland sometimes require permits for replacement — we handle that paperwork if your project needs it.

Foundations and Slabs

This is the heavy work. Most residential foundations are 6 to 12 inches thick with rebar throughout. Old commercial foundations can run 18 to 36 inches — that requires excavators with hydraulic thumbs and concrete pulverizers. We removed a foundation in Lake Hollingsworth after a house fire. The foundation was 18 inches thick with heavy rebar. Took three days to break it all up and haul it out. All that concrete went to a recycling facility and was crushed into fill material for other projects.

What Affects the Final Price

Thickness

4-inch concrete is far easier to remove than 12-inch reinforced concrete. Thicker means more weight, more time, and more equipment.

Rebar Density

Light rebar adds modest time. Heavy rebar every 12 inches requires concrete saw cutting throughout, which adds significant labor.

Site Access

Equipment driving right up to the concrete means a fast job. Hauling chunks 100 feet through a narrow gate adds time and labor cost.

Surroundings

Breaking up concrete in an open driveway is straightforward. Working around AC units, landscaping, and mature trees requires more care and time.

How We Handle Debris

Concrete does not go to regular landfills. We haul all concrete debris to licensed recycling centers in Polk County where it is crushed into base material for new construction, road base, and drainage projects. Nothing goes to waste and recycling typically costs less than landfill disposal.

We bring dumpsters sized for your project and load debris continuously throughout the job. You never see piles of concrete chunks sitting in your yard. By the time we are done, your property is clean and level.

Florida-Specific Concrete Problems

Heat and Humidity

Florida's heat makes concrete expand and contract daily. Summer temps hit 95 degrees, then afternoon thunderstorms cool everything rapidly. This cycle repeated for decades creates stress cracks — especially without proper control joints in the original pour.

Water and Erosion

Lakeland gets 50-plus inches of rain per year. Water seeps under concrete, washes away base material, creates voids. The concrete settles into those voids and cracks. New concrete needs proper grading to shed water away from the slab.

Tree Roots

Florida oak roots are aggressive. They grow under concrete, push it up, and create trip hazards. When we remove the concrete, those roots are still there and may need grinding before a new pour.

Sinkholes and Voids

Central Florida sits on limestone. Water erodes it and creates voids underground. Sometimes removing concrete reveals a void where the ground has washed away. We document everything and let you know before new concrete goes in.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does concrete removal take in Lakeland?

Depends on size and thickness. A standard two-car driveway takes 4 to 8 hours. A small patio runs 3 to 4 hours. Large foundation removal can take 1 to 3 days. We give you an exact timeline after measuring your concrete on-site.

What happens to the concrete after you remove it?

All concrete goes to recycling facilities in Polk County where it is crushed into base material for new construction and road projects. Nothing goes to waste.

Can you remove just part of my driveway or patio?

Yes. We can remove specific sections if that is what your project needs. Maybe you are expanding, adding a sidewalk connection, or cutting in a new access point. We break out just what needs to go and leave the rest intact.

Will you damage my landscaping?

We work carefully to minimize impact on surrounding areas. We protect landscaping, mark sprinkler lines, and work around plants when possible. We cannot always avoid every blade of grass but we do our best to minimize disturbance.

Do I need to be home during the concrete removal?

No. As long as we have access to the work area, you do not need to be there. We coordinate timing with you and can send progress photos if you want updates.

What if you find underground utilities?

We call 811 before every project to mark underground utilities — electric, gas, water, sewer, cable, and phone. Everything gets marked before we start. In older Lakeland neighborhoods utilities sometimes run in unexpected places. The locate service finds all of it.

How much does concrete demolition cost in Lakeland?

Estimates range from $300 to $600 for sidewalk removal up to $3,500 to $6,500 for reinforced foundation removal. Standard driveway removal estimates run $800 to $1,500. All estimates are confirmed after we visit your property and assess thickness, rebar, and site access. Call (863) 412-5036 for a free written estimate.

Will there be a lot of dust?

We wet down the concrete constantly while breaking it. You will see some dust — it is unavoidable — but we minimize it as much as possible. Your neighbors will not see dust clouds rolling across their yards.
