About Lake Alfred

Lake Alfred is a city of about 6,400 people in Polk County sitting along US Highway 17/92 between Auburndale and Haines City. About 42 percent of the city's total area of 8.6 square miles is water, making it one of the most lake-dense communities in Polk County. The main lake, Lake Alfred, covers 676 acres and is part of the Peace River watershed.

The city's history goes back to 1839 when Fort Cummings was established here during the Second Seminole War. After the war the area gradually grew as a railroad stop, going through the names Fargo, Chubb, and Bartow Junction before officially becoming Lake Alfred in 1915. The city was named for Alfred Parslow, who came to Florida in 1877 and helped establish the Jacksonville, Tampa and Key West Railroad. In 1917 the State of Florida established the first off-campus University of Florida center here — the Citrus Experiment Station, which today is the UF/IFAS Citrus Research and Education Center still operating on the north side of the city.

Mackay Gardens and Lakeside Preserve is a 125-acre park on Lake Haines with walking trails, a playground, and a historic estate used for community events. Lions Park sits on the shore of Lake Alfred with a swimming beach, boating access, and picnic areas. Frank C. Gardner Park on East Alfred Road hosts Heritage Day and the annual Christmas Tree Lighting. The Barn Antiques on US-17/92 has been a community fixture since 1969. Lucky Lowe Water Ski School operates on Old Lake Alfred Road and has been teaching water skiing on the lake for decades. Florida Distillers produces beverages in the city. The Winter Haven Chain of Lakes Trail connects Lake Alfred south to Winter Haven.
